Nike and Bode Rec. are unveiling a new campaign rooted in their shared appreciation of sport heritage and mission to serve all athletes, refreshing the iconic Nike and Bode Rec. Astrograbber silhouette in two head-turning colorways.
Nike athlete Ja’Marr Chase dons the revived turf shoe in a campaign awash in historic sport-style influence and tailored for contemporary resonance, representing an homage to both the silhouette’s football roots and its modern appeal.
Captured in New Orleans days ahead of the runway debut for both Chase and the new Astrograbber colorways, the campaign further cements the classic gridiron look as a contemporary sportswear staple.
“Bode Rec. is a line devoted to the history and evolution of athletic apparel, with a personal tie to football inspired by the time my dad spent playing the sport in high school and college,” says Emily Adams Bode Aujla, Bode founder and designer. “A lot of my inspiration for the restyled Astrograbber and new campaign is drawn from the anecdotal stories I learned when I visited Nike World Headquarters of Nike employee No. 1 Jeff Johnson and of Bill Bowerman, who created Nike’s famous waffle sole using his wife’s waffle iron, reminding of the handcrafted elements of early Nike footwear.”
The Bode Rec. take on the Astrograbber — which originally debuted in 1974 on the heels of Nike’s famed Waffle Trainer — upgrades the utilitarian turf shoe to a timeless look, with two new colorways celebrating the silhouette's enduring appeal.
A black, woven textile design is the perfect complement to any sport-style look, while a green, leather style takes inspiration from a pair of Bowerman’s homemade, hand-dyed waffle joggers that Bode Aujla spotted during her visit to the Department of Nike Archives.
Both looks sport metallic gold shoelace charms and come styled in custom packaging and branding that highlights the partnership between Nike and Bode Rec.
“Working with Nike to reimagine the Astrograbber means partnering with such a historic American brand, which really embodies the inspiration behind Bode Rec.,” says Bode Aujla. “Much like the Nike philosophy, I believe sport and recreation are vital to our growth as individuals, and that shines through in our new colorways and campaign.”
The campaign, shot by Eduardo Cerruti and Stephanie Draime, features antiques collected during Bode Aujla’s travels to Tokyo while launching the initial Nike and Bode Rec. campaign — calling to mind the universal appeal of the silhouette.
“The new Astrograbber colorways are timeless and easy to wear, giving the next generation new ways to add a throwback, vintage style to their look,” says Chase. “Nike and Bode Rec. hit all the right notes with their first collection last year, and these colorways take their partnership to another level.”
Both colorways will be available March 14 at bode.com, Bode retail locations in Los Angeles and New York City, and a new Bode boutique in Paris. The black colorway will be available on SNKRS and at select Nike and Bode Rec. retail partners March 21.
