Nike is joining forces with Tomo Koizumi, one of Japan’s foremost fashion designers, to unveil an exclusive, vibrant expression of the Air Superfly — blending the dynamism of sport with the drama of couture to create an inseparable link between performance and personal style.
Inspired by the dual influences of Japanese manga and elite women athletes, Tomo merges art and athletics in an Air Superfly silhouette that boldly embodies powerful femininity and contemporary innovation.
“The Nike Air Superfly is a beautiful canvas for both artistic and athletic expression,” says Tomo, who’s known for his signature extravagant ruffle designs and bold color displays. “My vision was to create a distinctive, versatile silhouette that merges running-inspired design, personalization, and evocative materials and colors to allow the shoe to take on different personalities depending on how women want to style it that day.”
Tomo’s hallmark color vibrance is on full display in his expression of the sleek sportswear silhouette, which was reintroduced this spring, 25 years after its inception as a low-profile racing trainer. The upper and tongue logo feature a bright, lenticular material that changes color in shifting light, while the multicolor outsole features distinctive green dots that mimic 2000s-era track spike placement.
Three interchangeable Swooshes — including multicolor and black ruffle styles — create further distinction, and multiple lace options allow athletes* to create more or less volume, depending on their look. Tomo’s logo is included on the sock liner, solidifying the silhouette as his latest artistic creation.
Nike and Tomo further bring his vision for the Air Superfly to life through a campaign that features Nike athletes Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and 10-time world champion sprinter; Masai Russell, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist in the 100-meter hurdles; and Arie Aoki, an emerging sprinter from Tomo’s home country of Japan.
“Athletes like Shelly-Ann redefine what it means to be unapologetically stylish and feminine while also being fiercely strong and performing at the highest level,” says Tomo. “It inspires me to see how they can both push their athletic limits and express themselves through fashion, breaking boundaries in sport and self-expression.”
The Nike x Tomo Koizumi Air Superfly will be available September 19 at Dover Street Market Ginza and select retail partners in Japan before launching globally September 20 across SNKRS and select retail partners.
