Gender Equity

At NIKE, we work to promote equitable workplaces, including in the non-US facilities where our products are made.

Research shows that companies with greater gender equity tend to financially outperform those without. However, gender representation gaps still exist in nearly every industry, including footwear and apparel manufacturing. Over 73% of our strategic supplier workforce are women; when we look at leadership roles, however, that percentage falls, with our latest data showing men are promoted to leadership 2.5x more frequently. We are working with strategic suppliers across finished goods manufacturing to advance workplace environments that help close that gap by helping them understand the importance of gender equity, establish their gender equity baseline and strengthen their capabilities, policies and practices to promote upward mobility for women.

Measuring Equity

When it comes to driving gender equity, strategic suppliers must implement—and uphold—comprehensive policies and effective practices. To guide them in doing so, we continually measure performance through our Gender Equity Self-Diagnostic Tool (SDT), developed together with the International Center for Research on Women. Suppliers are required to complete the SDT annually. We analyze 10 domains that have a significant influence on creating gender-equitable cultures in footwear and apparel manufacturing:

  • Gender Equity Commitments and Policies
  • Recruitment and Hiring
  • Professional Development and Skill Building
  • Employee Evaluation and Promotion
  • Pay and Compensation
  • Gender-Based Violence and Harassment
  • Care and Support for Working Parents
  • Employee Health, Safety and Wellbeing
  • Transportation and Accommodation

Building Supplier Capability

We remain keenly focused on capability building and measurement, encouraging strategic suppliers wherever they are on their gender equity maturity journey. During FY24, we partnered with gender experts CARE Impact Partners to deliver one-on-one capability building to facilities in Vietnam and Cambodia in need of extra support based on their progress. Through the partnership, CARE Impact Partners worked with strategic suppliers to understand key concerns and areas for improvement.

Women’s Leadership Accelerator Program

We believe in helping facilities develop a workplace culture that enables more equal representation. One way we do this is by providing women with culturally and professionally relevant leadership development training through our Women’s Leadership Accelerator Program, developed in partnership with International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Mekong Development Research Institute, in Vietnam.

We initially launched the Women’s Leadership Accelerator Program in Vietnam as it represents the largest proportion of our physical manufacturing footprint. Now, to create impact at scale, we are expanding the program to new areas, starting with Indonesia, our second largest manufacturing footprint.
