Periods can be a barrier to sport and movement for teens and adults — physically, mentally and emotionally. Knowing this, Nike created Leak Protection: Period, an ultrathin, absorbent liner that helps protect against period leaks to provide extra comfort and confidence.
With significant materials validation and wear testing, Nike designers focused on delivering added protection in a garment to be worn with a tampon, pad or cup. They combined a two-layer laminate gusset and liner that absorbs, wicks and holds blood with a membrane that acts as an anti-leakage barrier.
The Nike One Leak Protection: Period Short, coming to consumers in the Nike One Short silhouette, has a supportive 7-inch inseam and invisible built-in brief. Nike designers created and tested more than 30 prototypes to find the just-right fit for movement and comfort.
"Fear of bleed-through is real — and not just through the teen years, but through the entire journey of menstruation," says Lisa Gibson, Senior Project Manager, Nike Apparel Innovation, and a key player in developing this new innovation. “Nike Leak Protection: Period is for people with periods across all life stages, designed to give them an added layer of confidence so they can feel secure during all forms of sport and movement. It's an innovation that we believe will change people's lives."
Nike Leak Protection: Period will soon debut on the pitch during the biggest sporting event of the year for Nike’s 13 federation partners, helping to eliminate distractions on match day so players can perform their best. The innovation will be offered in players' base layer, the Nike Pro Short, for extra protection when they need it.
The Nike One Leak Protection: Period Short is available early April at nike.com and select specialty stores.
