Cheung Ka Long holt zweite Goldmedaille

Der Florettfechter und Nike Athlet Cheung Ka Long, der Hongkong vertrat, gewann bei einem spannenden Finale seine zweite Goldmedaille im Florett-Einzel der Herren. Seine erste hatte er bei den Spielen in Tokio geholt.

Ka Longs Motto "Don't lose your way" (dt. "nicht vom Weg abkommen") soll ihn an den Grund erinnern, aus dem er überhaupt mit dem Fechten angefangen hat: wegen der Freude und dem Spaß am Spiel.

Er wuchs bereits in einer athletischen Familie auf – seine Eltern spielten beide in der Nationalliga Hongkongs Basketball – und nahm mit vier Jahren das Fechten auf. 2017 wurde er zum Nike Athleten und gewann die Junioren-Weltmeisterschaft. Er gewann den World Cup im Jahre 2022 und Anfang 2024 folgte der Grand Prix.

"Als Kind habe ich manchmal geweint und war sehr unglücklich, wenn ich verloren habe", so Ka Long. "Dann sagten meine Eltern: 'auch wenn du verlierst, darfst du es dem Gegner nie leicht machen'. Daran denke ich immer, wenn ich im Wettkampf merke, dass es nicht so gut läuft. Wer mich schlagen will, dem mache ich es nicht leicht. Irgendwie führte das bis jetzt immer zum Erfolg."
