    Overview

    The Nike Explore Team Sport Research Lab is philosophically and physically at the heart of the NIKE, Inc. World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. It began as a small lab in Exeter, N.H. more than 30 years ago, and has grown into a a world-class research facility harnessing dedicated brainpower and state-of-the-science research equipment unequalled in the sporting goods industry. Carrying on the traditions of Nike’s original sport researcher Bill Bowerman the lab continues to deliver proven scientific insights that help drive performance innovations across the Nike brand.

    Today, the lab employs more than 40 researchers, many of whom hold doctorates or master’s degrees in a wide range of scientific disciplines including biomechanics, physiology, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, math, kinesiology and systems science. Combined, the team brings more than 250 years of sport research experience to NIKE, Inc.

    The research lab is an integral part of the Nike Explore Team, whose mission is to drive product innovation for athletes everywhere. The lab fuels product innovation specifically through knowledge and insight gained from a scientific understanding of athletes and athletic performance. The research encompasses fundamental questions to unlock innovation, and builds on a knowledge base by tapping into insights from the world’s best athletes. Over the years, researchers have tested countless ideas in pursuit of aiding performance, reducing injury risk, enhancing perception and feel, and delivering innovative products to athletes. 

    As a global hub of sport science knowledge, the sport research lab has established research partnerships with major universities and institutions throughout Asia, Europe and North America. These strategic partnerships, along with access to the world's best talent, tools and athletes, allow the lab to maintain cutting-edge science.

    Areas of Focus

    Nike sport research focuses on biomechanics, physiology, sensory/perception and data science. Researchers test theories and conduct studies in pursuit of enhancing performance, reducing injury, strengthening perception and feel, and delivering innovative products to athletes primarily through these four disciplines.

    Biomechanics

    Biomechanics is the study of human movement and related forces. A critical area of study in the lab, the Nike biomechanics team focuses on understanding the mechanics of athletic skills and maneuvers with the intention of enhancing performance and reducing the risk of injury. The scientific information collected by the team is applied to product design and development. 

    One way Nike scientists can measure the body’s movement is with a sports science visualization tool. This tool generates a 3-D rendering of an athlete in motion, delivering key data and insights that inform designer decisions.

    PHYSIOLOGY

    The Physiology team conducts research with the goal of creating footwear and apparel solutions that enhance athlete performance. The goal of this research is to create footwear and apparel solutions that lower an athlete’s body temperature and reduce his or her energy expenditure, thereby allowing him or her to train longer and harder.The team focuses on three primary athlete needs:

    • Thermoregulation—With the use of environmental chambers, Nike physiologists are able to bring the heat of Rio de Janeiro or the frost of Sochi to Beaverton. Both athletes and the specially designed sweating mannequin known as Hal (a life-sized anatomical model), are tested in these chambers, allowing Nike physiologists to conduct critical thermoregulation research.

    • Recovery—Practice and competition can leave athletes feeling exhausted and sore. Nike physiologists strive to develop apparel that helps athletes recover more quickly so they’re ready for the next challenge.

    • Economy—The physiology team helps develop footwear that allows athletes to run more efficiently, giving them more “miles per gallon,” which saves precious energy for the end of the the race or fourth quarter of the game. Ultimately, this allows athletes to run further, faster and longer.

    PERCEPTION

    The perception team explores how sensory perception influences and interacts with athletic performance. Through subjective evaluation of product attributes, usability and durability, perception researchers devise solutions to age-old questions like “How can I run faster?” and “How can I jump higher?”

    The perception team works closely with the physiology team to understand athletes’ opinion of a garment’s general comfort, thermal comfort and moisture management capabilities in different environments. Understanding an athlete’s perception enables the physiology team to know how athletes truly feel while exercising in Nike apparel in different environmental conditions.

    DATA SCIENCE

    The data science team in the lab uses mathematical modeling and prediction of the complex interaction of athletes and Nike products. The five key areas of research include data mining, mathematical modeling, data standardization, data storage solutions and knowledge engine.

    The field of biomechanics was in its infancy when Nike set up the sport research lab in 1980. In the decades since, the lab’s role in identifying and understanding athletes’ needs has proven integral to the development of countless Nike technologies and products, and serves as the cornerstone of ongoing innovation.     TESTING METHODS

    • Foot-pressure measurement (in-shoe and external)

    • Accelerometers

    • Foot morphology (anthropometrics)

    • Electromyography (muscle activity)

    • High-speed video (>30,000 frames/second)

    • Metabolic cart (oxygen consumption)

    Inside the motion capture lab

    In the technical motion capture lab, high-speed video cameras collect video at 1,000 times the rate of standard video cameras and four force plates in the floor allow researchers to see how athletes generate force and where the power in their bodies comes from. Learn more about how these tools provide key data and insights for improving performance product.

    Process

    Distinct groups focus on each critical stage of research and design devlopment.

    • Researchers who focus on performance insights work with elite athletes across multitiple sports to establish an objective understanding of the needs of different athletes, the demands of the sport and the environments in which they train and compete.

    • Next, scientists explore advanced concepts that have the potential to radically alter performance, protection and perception across multiple sports for athletes of all skills and abilities.

    • The applied research team dives deep into the specific demands of Running, Basketball, Global Football (Soccer) and Football to deliver sport-specific innovations

    • At the final stage, a group ensures that each new product meets NIke's high standards.

    The science of basketball agility

    Agility can be improved through training, but because of many factors involved in agility and the wide variety of training regimes, there is room to improve sport-specific agility training programs.     Vendor Management and Invoicing

    Nike has partnered with Tradeshift, a web-based business network for simple vendor management and electronic invoicing for indirect (non-product) vendors.  

    What this means for new U.S. suppliers

    • Ask your Nike contact to send an invite via email to register as a new supplier on Tradeshift.

    • Fill out a substitute W9 application in Tradeshift.

    • Upon approval of your application, vendors can invoice Nike through Tradeshift and have visibility to transaction status (unless the business team has made other payment arrangements with the P2P Process Excellence  Team).

    Who qualifies?

    Our goal is to offer suppliers real procurement opportunities as they arise, and all purchasing is done in a competitive marketplace. 

    A minority-owned business is a for-profit enterprise, regardless of size, physically located in the United States or its trust territories, which is owned, operated and controlled by minority group members.

    Minority group members are U.S. citizens who are Asian, Black, Hispanic or Native American (see definitions below). Ownership by minority individuals means the business is at least 51-percent owned by such individuals, or in the case of a publicly-owned business, at least 51 percent of the stock is owned by one or more such individuals. Furthermore, the management and daily operations of the business are controlled by those minority group members.

    In addition to Minority groups, Nike also recognizes for-profit businesses which are at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by a woman or women, veteran-owned, service-disabled veteran owned or gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender American(s).

    According to the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), minority groups are defined as follows:

    Asian-Pacific: A U.S. citizen whose origins are from Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Trust Territories of the Pacific or the Northern Marianas.

    Black: A U.S. citizen having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

    Hispanic: A U.S. citizen of true-born Hispanic heritage, from any of the Spanish-speaking areas of the following regions: Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean Basin only.  Brazilians shall be listed under Hispanic designation for review and certification purposes.

    Native American: A person who is an American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut or Native Hawaiian, and regarded as such by the community of which the person claims to be a part. Native Americans must be documented members of a North American tribe, band or otherwise organized group of native people who are indigenous to the continental United States and proof can be provided through a Native American Blood Degree Certificate (i.e., tribal registry letter, tribal roll register number).

    Vendors must be certified by a national minority or women’s group or organization or by the Federal, State or Local Government. Governmental certifications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
